The South DeKalb Tribe is a youth sports organization officially founded August 8, 2015. The mission of the South DeKalb Tribe is to foster good character and future productive citizens through sports and a unique approach at making a positive impact in our community.
The organization is comprised of likeminded families and leaders in the surrounding areas of South DeKalb County Georgia. Original planning began during the college days on the campus of Valdosta State University where the founders attended. The organization is led by Willie Slaton IV as Executive Director, Kyle Moody as Assistant Director of Marketing and Sedrick Parker as Assistant Director of Development. Each of the Tribe Co-Founders have deep ties to the community and have a yearning desire to positively impact the youth in the community they were raised in. Through an unprecedented approach, the South DeKalb Tribe strives to promote excellence in our youth by utilizing sports to foster good character, citizenship and successful life skills.
As college graduates, corporate executives, educators and youth mentoring program creators, Tribe leaders attribute much of their personal successes and life skills to their maturation in youth sports. Life skills that are derived harmoniously when one becomes involved in joining their peers to achieve success collectively and individually. In pursuit of this success requires many characteristics that help shape a child into a positive and productive citizen as an adult. Vital lessons such as a strong work ethic, preparation, discipline, competitiveness, sacrifice and team work are all engrained into the make-up of a child when immersed in an environment with these fundamental principles at the forefront.
Teaching methods used on a daily basis with the children in the organization are in full efforts to prepare them for life beyond DeKalb County. As former collegiate athletes, Tribe leaders also have a depth of knowledge of what will be required of individuals who have dreams of continuing their athletic careers to the high school, college and professional ranks. By incorporating parents, community leaders, educators, Greek organizations, college and professional athletes, the Tribe utilizes a 360 degree approach that will expose, set expectations and create levels of accountability for all to improve the lives of children in our community.
The Tribe achieved some amazing accomplishments in 2016 during its first full season on and off the field. The Tribe 11 and under Gold, won several tournaments during the course of the year and earned a birth to compete in the Elite 32 National World Series at the Disney Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Fl in July 2016. The Tribe 11 and under Navy won the GrandSlam Georgia State Championship and posted and impressive 5 and 2 record in the USSSA Global World Series in Gulf Shores, Al also in July 2016. The organization as a whole also participated in several community involvement events including the Heart of South DeKalb parade and the Atlanta Lupus Walk. In December of 2016, the Tribe hosted its inaugural Holiday Giveback where Tribe players personally handed out more than 600 pairs of underwear and 400 personal hygiene items to the homeless in downtown Atlanta with the help of Peach State Health Plan donating 100 branded bags to give away.
